Which Engineers Make $400,000 a Year?

Four groups of engineers clear $400,000 in total compensation in the United States in 2026: senior individual contributors at frontier AI labs (OpenAI L4 and up, Anthropic Senior, Google DeepMind L5 and up), Staff-level engineers at big tech, Senior engineers at high-cash employers such as Netflix, and specialist roles where supply is short, including Forward Deployed Engineers and infrastructure engineers who run training clusters. In almost every case the base salary is $250K to $400K and equity carries the rest.

$400K is not a title. It is the point where equity stops being a bonus and becomes most of the paycheck.

Engineering roles that clear $400,000 in total compensation
Entry point to $400K L4 / E5 Mid-level at a frontier lab
Typical base at $400K TC $250K – $400K Equity carries the remainder
Years of experience 5 – 8 At a lab; 8 to 12 elsewhere

Which roles actually pay $400K?

The table below lists the roles where $400K total compensation is the median or the bottom of the band, not the exceptional outcome. Anything that reaches $400K only with a record performance rating and a stock run-up is excluded, because a band you can only hit in a good year is not a salary.

Role Employer type Base Total comp Years in
Mid-level engineer (L4) OpenAI $260K – $320K $400K – $600K 4 – 7
Senior engineer Anthropic $400K – $450K $900K – $1.4M 6 – 10
Senior engineer (L5) Google / DeepMind $220K – $300K $450K – $700K 5 – 8
Senior engineer (E5) Meta Superintelligence Labs $230K – $300K $500K – $800K 5 – 8
Staff engineer (L6 / E6) Big tech, standard org $250K – $320K $500K – $850K 8 – 12
Senior engineer Netflix $600K – $1M $600K – $1M 7 – 12
Forward Deployed Engineer Palantir $180K – $250K $400K median 4 – 8
Principal engineer (level 66) Microsoft AI $244K – $330K $420K – $750K 10 – 15

Netflix is the outlier worth studying. It pays close to the whole package in cash and lets the employee decide how much to convert into stock options, so a Netflix Senior engineer at $700K is holding $700K of spendable money while a Google L6 at the same number is holding roughly $300K of cash and a vesting schedule.

How much of $400K is cash?

Usually between half and two thirds. At the frontier labs the base tops out around $400K to $450K even at Staff level, and the rest arrives as private equity with no market to sell into. An engineer comparing a $420K offer against a $400K one is often comparing $300K of cash to $400K of cash and reading it backwards.

Anthropic sits at the extreme end: Senior engineers earn $400K to $450K in base alone, which means the cash component by itself clears the threshold this page is about. The trade-off is liquidity: those grants are private stock with no routine employee tender path, so they stay on paper until a future liquidity event.

The practical test on any offer is what happens if the equity goes to zero. If the remaining number still supports the life the offer was accepted for, the package is a salary. If it does not, the package is a bet with a salary attached.

What engineering jobs pay $250,000 a year?

$250K is roughly two levels below the $400K threshold and reachable without a frontier lab. Senior engineers at second-tier tech companies, mid-level engineers at big tech (Google L4, Meta E4), engineering managers at Series B and C startups in the Bay Area, and Staff engineers outside the major hubs all land in the $220K to $300K band.

The gap between $250K and $400K is not a skill gap of the same size. It is mostly employer selection. The same engineer moving from a mid-tier company to a frontier lab at an equivalent level commonly sees the number double, because the second employer is competing in a much smaller talent pool.

How long does it take to reach $400K?

At a frontier AI lab, five to eight years of experience is enough, because those companies compress leveling and pay mid-level engineers what big tech pays Staff. Outside the labs, the same number takes eight to twelve years, since it requires reaching L6 or E6 where cross-team scope becomes the promotion criterion.

The fastest observed route is a lateral move rather than a promotion. Internal promotion cycles move compensation in single-digit percentages, while a level-matched external offer resets the band. This is also the least comfortable route, which is why most engineers who could take it do not.

Does location still change the number?

Less than it did in 2021, and more than remote-work advocates claim. San Francisco still pays 15% to 25% more than the rest of the US for AI engineering, and the frontier labs increasingly pay senior IC engineers the same total comp regardless of US location.

Outside AI, the adjustment survives. A Staff engineer at a company that geo-tiers salaries lands 10% to 25% below the same level in a major hub, and international offices run 25% to 60% below equivalent US roles on a USD basis. The Bay Area AI salary premium page breaks the current gap down by role.

Where the numbers on this page come from

The bands above are the same ones used across the CTAIO salary set, drawn from Levels.fyi submissions, recruiter intake conversations, and public filings through Q2 2026, then cross-checked against reported offers. They are total compensation in the United States, before tax, and they assume the equity vests on schedule at the valuation in effect when the grant was made.

For the level-by-level detail behind these numbers, see AI lab levels explained, which maps OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta, and Microsoft leveling onto each other. For the company-by-company ranking, see the AI company salaries guide. If an offer is already on the table, the AI salary negotiation playbook covers the counter-offer math.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engineers make $400,000 a year?
Senior individual contributors at frontier AI labs (OpenAI L4 and above, Anthropic Senior, Google DeepMind L5 and above), Staff-level engineers at big tech, Senior engineers at high-cash employers such as Netflix, and short-supply specialists including Forward Deployed Engineers and training-cluster infrastructure engineers. Base salary at that total is typically $250K to $400K, with equity carrying the rest.
Is $400K a realistic engineering salary or an outlier?
It is the median for senior IC roles at frontier AI labs and the bottom of the Staff band at big tech, so it is realistic for that specific population. Across all US software engineers it remains roughly the top few percent. The distinction that matters is employer, not seniority alone.
How much of a $400K engineering package is cash?
Usually half to two thirds. Frontier lab base salaries top out around $400K to $450K even at Staff level, so most packages above that number are equity-weighted. Netflix is the exception: it pays close to the entire package in cash and lets the employee choose how much to convert into options.
What engineering jobs pay $250,000 a year?
Senior engineers at second-tier tech companies, mid-level engineers at big tech such as Google L4 and Meta E4, engineering managers at Series B and C startups, and Staff engineers outside the major hubs. The band runs roughly $220K to $300K. The distance from there to $400K is mostly employer selection rather than a skill gap of equivalent size.
How long does it take an engineer to reach $400K?
Five to eight years of experience at a frontier AI lab, which compresses leveling and pays mid-level engineers what big tech pays Staff. Eight to twelve years elsewhere, because it requires reaching L6 or E6 where cross-team scope becomes the promotion bar. A level-matched external move resets the band faster than an internal promotion cycle.
Do engineers outside the Bay Area reach $400K?
Yes, and more easily than in 2021. Frontier labs largely do not geo-adjust AI research and engineering pay, so a remote hire at the same level lands in the same band. Companies that do geo-tier still apply a 10% to 25% discount outside the major hubs, which puts $400K out of reach at Staff level in most secondary markets.
